A New Transition

The people have spoken. And while the national political landscape may have shifted, it appears that Cuyahoga County has put itself back in the hands of many of the usual players. However, the new county Council and Executive positions are sure to bring a new era to area politics, and not a moment too soon. We congratulate those who voted.

A few months ago, I wrote a piece for Cool Cleveland about the closing of Historic St. Peter Church titled What Does It Mean to Lose Your Church?. I suppose this follow-up could have been called something like, “What Does It Mean to Be Part of a Breakaway Catholic Community?” but that seemed unwieldy.

Members of the former St. Peter Church have formed a legal entity, the Community of St. Peter (CSP), as a way to continue worshipping together and to continue the ministries of the former parish, which was closed in April as part of the diocese’s downsizing plan. After meeting in temporary digs at Cleveland State University for services that were more like prayer meetings, the community held the first mass at its new home at 7100 Euclid Avenue on August 15.

The new space is not sanctioned by the diocese. It’s not a parish. What it is depends on where you stand. It can be called courageous and inspiring. It can be called blasphemous and insulting... Read more from Susan Petrone here

Once upon a time, an outdoorsy family from Solon was inspired, probably after a trip to Burton, to tap Maple trees and make maple syrup. They also decided to plant apple and peach trees on their properties. The kids played in a hand-hewn tree house. Eventually, they ordered a queen bee that arrived in a tiny wire box, and were in the honey business.

Beecology started with two beehives and guidance from the Ohio State Extension’s beehive guy, who teaches apiary types how to keep disease and mites away. Before they knew it, Amy and David Rzepka had sixteen beehives, were making honey, and became friendly with the local beekeepers association. There are two types of false courage found out there in the mean streets, and both can prove deadly: Bottle courage, and pistol courage.

Two men were recently sent to prison for separate murders, sentenced to what prisoners call "Buck Rogers Time," a term used to describe a release date so far in the future it boggles the mind, and both were the result of false courage at play: Cases where the otherwise cowardly (or at least sane) being fooled into thinking they were bad dudes...
