Bloom
Meanwhile, other things smell. Richey Piiparinen watches Dan Gilbert buy Detroit and wonders about his path in Cleveland. Larry Durstin wonders if Rob Portman's vote against background checks will haunt him. Mansfield wonders if we need some standards for our cool urban agriculture projects, and wonders why the County allows Lockup to lockdown our brand. Roldo wonders if all the attention on Cleveland this week points to a systemic failure. Bob Yanega calls this place "a City of Miracles."
Our friend Nathan Rutz wins $20 this week just for using our mobile app. That's an easy way to put the bloom on your day. --Thomas Mulready

It's audacious, but not unprecedented.
Cleveland Orchestra members have been playing in small venues on Cleveland's near west side for about 3 years, since Joshua Smith, principal flutist for TCO, started presenting small ensemble work at The Happy Dog in 2010.
But nothing has prepared us for the sheer scale and scope of their upcoming residency, presenting 16 events at 14 different venues, from an ice cream parlor to a butcher shop, from a wine bar to a movie theatre, from a funky coffee shop to a huge Catholic church.
Listen as Smith and his collaborator Frank Rosenwein, principal oboist with TCO talk about how this massive project evolved, and some of the cool events they are looking forward to during this residency, The Cleveland Orchestra at home in Gordon Square, from Sat 5/11 through Fri 5/17.

When Old Stone Church's senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. R. Mark Giuliano, invited us to shoot a Cool Cleveland video inside their incredible Sanctuary, he lamented that previous attempts to capture the energy inside that magnificent edifice had failed.
So he invited us up on the pulpit to create our video on Sunday morning in the middle of his sermon in front of a full congregation. No kidding.
Tying in with his message to "Click Send" and go into the world, Giuliano is embracing social media with both arms.
Listen and watch from this unique perspective in the pulpit as we talk about the ways that Old Stone Church serves the Cleveland community through the Old Stone Choir and concerts, their art gallery, their Hope for the City speaker series, and with their collaborations with dozens of groups such as Bike Cleveland, the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, the City of Cleveland, and the Downtown Cleveland Residents Association, for which Giuliano serves as president. As Dan Gilbert buys up much of Detroit, and a good chunk of Cleveland, it is perhaps high time to analyze what his intentions are with our fair cities.
I mean, is he really investing in the Rust Belt for long-term economic growth? Or is he, well, not...

Dr. Darin Croft may have one of the coolest jobs in the world.
He's a research associate at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and he helped prepare for their new exhibit "Megalodon: Largest Shark That Ever Lived."
Listen to this interview as he talks about this fascinating and massive and prehistoric shark that lived for 15 million years and has been extinct for about 2 million years.
Have a look at their cool exhibit, with jaws of increasing size showing adolescent and mature shark jaws, and a huge display that allows visitors to actually walk inside this 60-foot long sculpture the size of Megalodon.
Also on display is "Sharkabet! A Sea of Sharks from A to Z," an exhibition of fantastical but scientifically accurate paintings of sharks in action by artist Ray Troll. CMNH.org.

Dan Fernandez took advantage of an innovative program Tri-C has with Berklee College of Music in Boston. You can take classes at Tri-C, even in high school, and your credits will transfer. "All my Tri-C credits would transfer to Berklee, so technically, I would be going in there as a junior."
"I applied to Berklee in Boston, and I got in." But the networking opportunities that Tri-C offered him in Northeast Ohio changed his mind.
"I decided to stay in Cleveland. I got to know a lot of people while I was at Tri-C." So this fall, he'll be studying at Cleveland State University.

Deep down inside every artist is a little kid who innocently fell in love with art. Sometimes the day-to-day obstacles of the "Art Life" can disenchant even the most passionate young artists.
However, for those that maintain their innocence and creativity, the world is a magical place...

"Lockup" Update
There's about six or seven more episodes of the excruciatingly horrible series Lockup: Extended Stay Cleveland that Cuyahoga County officials allowed to be filmed in the County Jail. The producers paid the county $11,000, which, in turn, brought us a million dollars worth of bad publicity...

Add them up: The Imperial Avenue atrocity of 11 women raped and murdered by Anthony Sowell; the gunning down of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams by out-of-control Cleveland police; and now the revelation that three young women have been held captive for years in a home on the city's near West Side right under our noses.
And who knows how many other failures?

There can be no greater miracle – some may call it no greater fantasy, dream-come-true, wish fulfillment, whatever – but there can be no greater one than for a loved one who is dead to come back to life. We see it happen in movies, we pray for it to be true in real life. But this week, it really happened in Cleveland, Ohio.
Life is flourishing in a city once thought dead, where new buildings, new businesses, and whole new industries are springing up. Cleveland is a city that seems to be thriving in every way possible: ranking high nationally in affordability, quality of life, and the rate of economic recovery. A city that is the envy of foodies everywhere, a city with a vibrant arts community, and a city booming with new plans and new construction...

PHOTOSTREAM: Bal Ingenieux: A Decadent Night for IngenuityFest
The biggest fundraiser of the year for IngenuityFest got underway on 05.13.13 at the Halcyon Lodge in Ohio City with a costume ball for the ages. Celebrating Cleveland's storied Kokoon Club (1913-1946) at which the region’s artists hosted an annual Bal-Masque and scandalized polite society with nudity and provocation, all Bal Ingenieux visitors arrived either in costume, or were offered a mask. Electronic fairies, hi-falutin' jazz ensembles, practically naked dancing men and some cool music and top-flight food & drink helped power the evening. Executive Director Paula Grooms''' announced the dates & location of the 2013 IngenuityFest: September 20-22 at Docks 30 & 32 where the Fest took place last year. Mark your calendar!
