Breakneck
Whether it's the 2nd annual Urban Film Fest or the 34th annual Tri-C JazzFest, this town's got it going on, and Cool Cleveland is right there, with a feature on the GCUFF and an interview with JazzFest's irrepressible impresario Terri Pontremoli.
Breakneck Gallery's hitting their stride with a show that allows you to collect art just like baseball cards. The Missing's been cooking at quite a pace themselves, as they celebrate 5 years & 50,000 brews. Project MOCA shows some style, EarthFest shows us another way to relate to our environment, InsideCPH shows us how to build a play, 3 Guys and A Lady shows us how to network. Don't miss CWAL's show that closes this week, or Noises Off, which opens at BW.
Record Store Day draws us back into our favorite independent record stores, looking for fresh vinyl. Or stop into the Winchester for National Open Mic Night, or Ms. Julie's Kitchen in Akron for the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale.

One of the top jazz festivals in the world, the Tri-C JazzFest is in the capable hands of managing director Terri Pontremoli, who gives Cool Cleveland the lowdown on this year's schedule of events running from Fri 4/19 to Sat 5/4.
From artists sporting a solid Cleveland connection (Joe Lovano, Dominick Farinacci, Tommy LiPuma) to edgy artists (clarinetist/saxophonist Anat Cohen & guitarists Bill Frisell Lionel Loueke) to stone legends (Aaron Neville & Natalie Cole), to a night of smooth jazz heavyweights and an evening dedicated to legacy of Dexter Gordon, this year's fest covers an increasingly wide range of styles that are comfortable with calling themselves "jazz."
They're featuring the Robert Glasper Experiment, who won the 2013 Grammy for best R&B album, and Dr. John, who just collaborated with Akron's Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys on his recent critically acclaimed album. Michael Feinstein mines the Great American Songbook with "The Gershwins and Me," and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra closes things out on Sat 5/4.
For the next couple weeks, Cleveland can truly say, "Jazz Lives Here."
CWAL's 6 in Studio closes this Fri 4/19 with an exhibition of work created by the artists in their collective, creative environment. Over the past month these artists have shared the Cleveland West Art League's gallery as a communal studio.
The result?: Each artist found a way to make work that creates a dialogue with the other installations and the space itself...

I had to chuckle reading Steve Litt's lead on his umpteenth piece ballyhooing a revamp of Public Square.
"Cleveland's drab and gray Public Square..." Litt starts the latest propaganda push for more downtown public dollars. Public Square is an essential property for the city. Is that why we put a gambling joint at its doorstep? To dress up the place. Good thinking...

The Rust Belt Is Dead God, I'm sorry but I think this is a really tired trope. If people are unhappy about something in Cleveland it's their own personal baggage. Do you know what the infant mortality rate is in this city for black children? It's positively third world....

Angie, I don't think this judgement (people's unhappiness) is an either/or proposition. If you read this article without taking Cleveland into context, you can conclude that the piece is ignoring tangible things that are wrong in Cleveland...
