VIDEO/REVIEW: Cleveland Play House Grand Re-Opening at Allen Theatre

VIDEO/TOUR: A Grand New Opening for a Grand Old Theater
Reinvented Allen Theater is now Cleveland Play House

At long last the curtains are pulled apart and the public is welcomed into the Allen Theater at Playhouse Square. Usually a renovation effects the outer skin, but this transformation has effected the very heart of the Allen Theater. Built as a cavernous movie house, the interior space has been reconfigured to be a much more intimate experience for theater goers.

As you enter under classic Euclid Avenue marquee, then pass through the long hall of mirrors and into the Reinberger Rotunda, all looks as you would expect. But passing by the bar and into the swanky new lobby, which has moody, blue lighting, you are alerted to a change of atmosphere. Continuing on back and into the new, contemporary theater, the intimacy of the space is comforting. Through metal scrim panels, you can see the original walls of the theater, with all the decorative painting and trim, but the contemporary new space held inside the panels is where your focus is. From the stage you can confront the audience at eye level. The depth of the stage feels like it is just as accommodating the 506 seat house!

Come along with Cool Cleveland correspondent Carol Drummond for a video tour of the unveiling of this exciting space. Compare this finished space with the video tour made in June, while the theater was under construction here.

4 actors play 150 roles

Joe Foust and Rob Johansen are the most overworked actors in town. Between the two of them, they play literally hundreds of roles, changing costumes, makeup, characters and voices in the blink of an eye. Their work in The Cleveland Play House's brilliant production of The 39 Steps, lifts the show into a frothy, dizzying astral plane. Read the Cool Cleveland review here.

Watch them warm up on stage as Cool Cleveland's Thomas Mulready runs them through their paces, and catch the hilarious excerpt at the end of the video when the two uber-versatile comic actors are joined by lead Nick Sandys and change characters literally at the drop of a hat. Watch the video here

Mischievous & enchanting
Cool Cleveland talks with the delightful stars of Emma

How is it possible that a story written in 1816 is still so popular, so often performed, so assiduously adapted and so earnestly remixed? Seriously, plug in Jane Austen's Emma in YouTube and you'll see what we mean.

Watch the video interview with the delightful stars of The Cleveland Play House's Michael Bloom-penned adaptation of Emma: Sarah Nealis [pictured, right], who plays the mischievous Emma, and Carolyn Faye Kramer, portraying the young Harriet, Emma's "project" who she tries to match with a husband, to hilarious effect.

Fans will remember the 1995 film Clueless, a contemporary updating of the classic novel, and the many period film versions, most recently, a sharp reading by the BBC in 2010. But nothing compares with seeing it live, on stage at the Cleveland Play House from Fri 2/26 thru Sun 3/21. More info
