It's no secret that Cleveland forsakes its past. Forest City journalist George Condon once wrote that no major city in the United States has a more deplorable record than Cleveland when it comes to venerating and preserving its historic sites. I couldn't agree more--and I'm not alluding to the dismantlement of its industrial landscape or the eclipse of its fabled "Millionaires' Row" mansions. Those are largely past physical recall but at least have been perpetuated, after a fashion, in various publications and archival institutions.

No, I refer to scenes of the more recent, if somewhat raffish past. It's a regrettable fact that there are no historical markers at the corner of East 115th Street and Euclid Avenue. And that's a shame, because that intersection played a memorable role in the genesis of Cleveland's first counterculture: the "hippie" drug scene of the mid-1960s...

Sunday, September 27 is a special day at the House of Blues as the Human Fund hosts "Geezeroo IV," an annual event that benefits arts programs in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. This year's event features three members of the 1970's landmark jazz group Return to Forever, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, as well as student performers from various Cleveland Schools.

The "Geezeroo" concerts, tagged as the Bonnaroo for old geezers, were created in 2006 to bring music from the 60s and 70s to Cleveland while raising money for arts education programs for Cleveland youth...

Touching on India

I came to love India in mid-July during a press trip designed to acquaint me with Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts. Not only did that tour take us through a place that likely hasn't changed much in the last 500 years, it also exposed us to the vibrancy of Indian wholesale commerce. Here were wedding clothes, including shimmering saris. Over there were small machine parts.

Turn an elbow-bending corner and you're in the midst of a spice market redolent with aroma and abuzz with flies (I didn't eat street food in India no matter how tantalizing). The passageways were so narrow there was no room for anything motorized larger than a motorcycle. They were packed with school kids in rickshaws motorized, bicycle-driven or pulled by a man; western couples out for a look at how "real" Indians live; businessmen in suits on their way to meetings.

All this despite heat so intense it was mystical, particularly when coupled with humidity of equal weight...

Wouldn't it be ironic if our failure to kill Romell Broom brings an end to the death penalty in Ohio?

Let me be as clear as I can be from the onset: Romell Broom is the scum of the earth. He raped and killed a 14-year-old child and I sincerely wish that would have had the courage and decency to hang himself in his cell on the night of his capture... or anytime thereafter. The world would certainly be a much better place without him in it... but, with that said, I remain adamant that state-sanctioned killing is wrong under any circumstances...

Volunteer Lawyers For The Arts

We laugh at the lawyer jokes, but when we really examine who lawyers are, they tend to be people who genuinely want to help preserve the rights of the people. Cleveland's rich legal history lends itself to more than average the number of lawyers- you probably know one, maybe even intimately. They may not be laborers, but they support the working class. They may not be artists, but they support the arts.

The Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts Committee of the CMBA provides legal assistance and education to income-eligible artists and arts organizations throughout the area. Artists now have the opportunity to help out the VLA by designing postcards that will be used to advertise the VLA to other artists. The winning Northeast Ohio artist is awarded a $500 commission...
