Cleveland’s dance scene is rife with traditional holiday entertainments. You can pick and choose on the theory that if it’s good it will be back next year or you can do what we do and see everything every year for a total Xmas buzz.
This year’s Nutcracker, performed by Cincinnati Ballet, is new to Cleveland audiences but it promises to touch familiar bases. Battling mice and toy soldiers, a live orchestra of Cleveland area musicians and 80 local dance students. Dancing Wheels’ Snowman puts a decidedly different spin on what is, in its 6th year of performance, a new holiday tradition. In Snowman the company lives its credo, that dance is an expression of the human spirit and truly for people of all abilities. Choreographer Sabatino Verlezza’s unique voice and modern dance sensibility make for a fresh and entertaining take on the magical journey. With music by Howard Blake and costumes by David Guthrie. From Wed 11/30 through Sun 12/4 with performances variously scheduled at 10 am, 2 pm and 7:30 pm. Karamu House performs Black Nativity, Langston Hughes’ Christmas classic for the 20th year running. Gorgeous costumes and gospel music WITH audience participation. Last year’s much-praised Director Terence Greene and the dancers of Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theatre return. 12/9 – 12/30/05 on various days and times at Karamu’s Jelliffe Theatre. $20 - $30.
