Don't Fear

Be brave. Not that there isn't a lot to fear.

CC correspondent Josh Usmani attended the City Club talk with CAC and CPAC discussing the suspension of individual artist Creative Workforce Fellowships while a study is concluded. Let's hope they recognize the economic, moral and aesthetic value of funding living, independent artists and not just institutions. And as Josh points out, that "Community Vibrancy" and "Artistic Excellence" are one in the same.

And let's hope that the extraordinary arrival of the Gay Games introduces a permanent cultural shift here in the middle of America, undoubtably a more lasting effect than on previous hosts like SF, NYC, Amsterdam, Sydney, Chicago or Cologne. This week's lecture at CPL on gay comix is timely.

The Ohio Burlesque Fest turns 4, the Waterloo Arts Fest heats up, Packy Malley's Midwest Reggae Fest moves, The Singing Angels do Cain Park, Mokoomba drops down at Transformer Station, Mahall's turns into a speakeasy, and the Lakewood Arts Fest takes over the streets, and cornhole takes over PlayhouseSquare. Now that's something to fear. --Thomas Mulready

Out of the Closet
And Into the Costume

Spoiler alert for those fans of Archie Comics who are currently living in a cave (with apparently great Wi-Fi). The titular character will be dying while trying to save his gay friend Kevin Keller.

Considering the news coverage, perhaps never before have mainstream comic books and the LGBTQ community been closer.

That's what makes the timing of the Cleveland Public Library and Ohio Center for the Book’s upcoming free lecture “Out of the Closet and Into the Costume: Gay Comix” more timely...

The Maltz Museum Premieres
New Riveting Exhibit: Inferno

Mind boggling! If you love stories told through cinematic masterpieces, then you have to see artist Yael Bartana's Inferno currently being screened at The Maltz Museum for Jewish Heritage. The film, focused on the rebuilding of The Temple of Solomon in São Paulo Brazil, tells of trials, culture and more.

CoolCleveland Correspondent Marty Bielat met up with The Maltz's Executive Director, Ellen Rudolph, and spoke with her about the exhibit. The Maltz will be hosting three panel discussions on the film. Each panel will focus on themes such as: Identity (Wed 7/30), Spectacle (Wed 8/13), and Memory (Wed 9/10).

Ohio Burlesque Fest Turns Four
More Nights, More Girls (and Boys), More Fun

Local burlesque promoter Bella Sin had a dream, and now her dream is coming true. The director of the decade-old troupe Le Femme Mystique wanted to create a festival in Cleveland that would make the city a destination for practitioners of this rebirthed art form.

Now that dream is going on four. This year's festival has expanded to three days, with the opening night taking place at Mahall's and the other two at the Beachland Ballroom. There'll be more than 50 performers from all over the country, classes for aspiring burlesque performers, vendors, and recognition of nonprofits and volunteers in the community...

Examining the Value of Art
City Club Forum Raises Important Questions

The value of art is difficult to calculate economically, because you don’t need to buy art to appreciate it. In fact, sometimes you can’t buy the work at all. The value of art is a debate currently taking place in regard to school curriculums all over the country.

While the CPAC Create Workforce Fellowship program is still relatively new -- 6 years into its ten year commitment -- its impact has made a real, tangible difference in our community...

When an individual is caught breaking the law our system of criminal justice imposes sanctions, which on its face is fair.

But, due to the fact ours is a broken system where some offenders receive sentences for bribery that are more harsh than what others receive for strong-arm robbery, rape and murder, clearly as deceased Harvard Law Professor William J. Stuntz outlined in his seminal 2011 book The Collapse of American Criminal Justice, something is amiss with jurisprudence in this country...

MANSFIELD: "Great White Father" Syndrome
This is 100% correct in that, no matter how well intended or competent, there are some situations where it matters to have been there. You might be surprised at how many of these non-proifts are aware of the problem.....
