Although guest curator, Robert Hobbs, introductory speech droned on like a modern history lecture, he was merely trying to emphasize the depth of complexity of the information that Mark Lombardi was trying to grasp when he developed his system of diagramming the relationships of people, events, and organizations. MOCA's exhibit of Mark Lombardi:Global Networks shows what this rather pragmatic motivation combined with an academically trained art historian resulted in with these wonderfully balanced line drawings that have as much depth for appreciation as depth in historical significance. These drawings explain the events and relationships of such newspaper headlines as the S&L scandal, Iran-Contra, and The Chicago Mob. You could stand back and appreciate the form and aesthetic of these wall sized structures, or go close and trace the connection of Hugh Heffner, Frank Sinatra, and Ronald Reagan with Sam Giacanna or Al Capone. It is something to see and probably needs a few visits to fully understand the range of information compiled there and feel the effort underlying in the well-placed node and crisp line pattern.
