Immigration is the key to Cleveland's future We should pay attention to a little study that was recently released by the College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University called "Immigration and Urban Development: Implications for Greater Cleveland," because it may help us understand the success of Cleveland's past (when poor immigrants came from Eastern Europe and the Southern US to fire Cleveland's industries) and may help us build a roadmap for Cleveland's future (this time we should attract skilled immigrants and those with "families" here to help them assimilate) and in fact, it may be the only way that Cleveland and the region can repopulate itself from the 36% population loss since 1970. Immigration and innovation are intimately linked (new immigrants=new ideas=new entrepreneurs =new businesses). The region needs to learn more tolerance, exhibit less segregation, study other cities' successful immigration plans, work with local communities to lure immigrants, and have the government and schools prepare people to accept a more diverse and cosmopolitan Cleveland.
