Arts & Culture Funding at Work Helping Students Thrive

This is an important time for Progressive Arts Alliance, and all arts & culture supporters, as they work to pass Issue 8, on the ballot this fall. Issue 8 renews the 1½-cent per cigarette Arts & Culture Levy, which provided funds for competitive grants administered by Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

CoolCleveland talked to Progressive Arts Alliance Executive Director Santina Protopapa about not only the importance of arts in the schools at a time many districts are cutting programs, but also the passage of Issue 8. Learn more.

Over the last decade, Cuyahoga Arts & Culture (CAC), which was created in 2006 when voters approved a tax on cigarettes to support arts and culture in our community, has invested more than $125 million in more than 300 organizations.

One such organization is Northeast Shores Development Corporation, the community development corporation serving the North Collinwood neighborhood. CoolCleveland talked to executive director Brian Friedman about the impact CAC has in his community.

Tom Schorgl of Community Partnership for Arts & Culture talks about Issue 8, which supports arts & culture in Cuyahoga County with over 1200 grants totaling over $125 million to over 2300 programs throughout the region. He notes, "that over $2 billion dollars of real economic impact was being generated in Cuyahoga County. That number provides lots of jobs, in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors." In addition, Schorgl, points out that a strong and vibrant arts & culture sector helps "to distinguish Greater Cleveland and Cuyahoga County when it comes to the reason that we have a great quality of life here; we have really fine educational programs, and neighborhood development."
