Welcome to the first monthly edition of Cool Cleveland. Since the Fall of 02, we've blasted a weekly e-newslettter out to tens of thousands of people who care deeply about Cleveland, Northeast Ohio, and the region. We feature news, events, commentary, interviews and, most importantly, the letters, comments and stories of our readers, who are some of the most committed and active Clevelanders that ever read an e-mail.

To get you as excited about Cool Cleveland as we are, we've started a contest to give away a top-of-the-line Video iPod to someone who signs up for the free Cool Cleveland weekly blast, or who invites a friend to do the same. We're strictly opt-in, and we've grow when people who love Cool Cleveland forward it to a friend. We hope to hear from you on some of the important and exciting issues and events we've collected below. Stay in touch. We'd love to hear from you.

Cuyahoga County Commissioner
Peter Lawson Jones

One of the three Cuyahoga County Commissioners, Peter Lawson Jones always speaks passionately and articulately for the causes that affect Northeast Ohioans. Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready caught up with him on the streets of Downtown Cleveland and videoed his comments on the new cigarette tax for the arts, the upcoming November election, and the four things that keep him awake at night. Watch the video here:

1) Put a lid on it They should have done this from the beginning: a $90 million retractable plastic hybrid roof over Cleveland Browns Stadium, so we can host the Super Bowl.

2) Red light cameras go too far They’ve caught 556 running red lights, but a whopping 26,008 speeding, for fines of up to $200. What’s going on here?

3) Lakewood's other Gold Coast $20 million Cliffs on Rocky River, a 46-unit lux boat and condo development, with units selling for $275K to $1 million, all without eminent domain, blight designation, or tax abatement.

4) Congestion in suburbs, not Downtown The most congested roads and intersections are not in Downtown Cleveland, but in places like Broadview Heights, Strongsville, and Beachwood.

5) Ohio lost 204,308 jobs since 2000 A shocking report details the "literally brutal impact" of the recent recession.

On red-light cameras (See Red light cameras go too far here) You bet I am fed up with those red light and speed cameras in Cleveland. It has absolutely nothing to do with safe streets and is everything to do with collecting money. It is another of Jane Campbell's hare brained ideas to soak more money for Cleveland from those living in the suburbs...

Why doesn’t the Cleveland Clinic pay taxes? (SeeWhy don't our huge non-profits pay taxes? here) The school system needs all the revenue it can get, and the PILOT program is definitely a step in the right direction. These large corporations that are targeted in the program utilize city services in many different ways but are exempt from the ever important property tax due to the current system in place.
