Correction What a great feature on Todd V. in your most recent issue of CoolCleveland! As you may have seen in my Facebook comment I posted re. the video when it was first posted, there were a few inaccuracies with regard to the grant for the digital media academy.

Todd V., Chris Green and Chris Miller did not receive a $500,000 grant from the Knight Foundation and Akron Community Foundation as you specify. Those folks, along with Chris Green's wife Joanne, brought the concept of a digital academy to Akron Community Foundation. The foundation liked it and in turn applied for a Knight Community Information Challenge grant, which aims "to help community and place-based foundations find creative ways to use new media and technology to keep residents informed and engaged" (Knight's words).

Last week, we found out Akron Community Foundation received the Knight grant for $350,000. Combined with the foundation's $100,000 Community Fund grant for the project, we now have a whopping $450,000 to get this fantastic idea off the ground.

You probably have no way of knowing this (most people don't) but - under law - community foundations are not allowed to make grants to individuals or organizations that are aren't 501(c)3 nonprofits by the IRS. Those four individuals clearly are not a nonprofit, so Akron Community Foundation is, in essence, the financial agent of the program. (I've attached a release we sent out Jan. 13 which I absolutely should have copied you on; my apologies.)

Anyway, I hope that clarifies it a bit. It's an exciting project, and we're happy to be embarking on it with them, the Beacon Journal and the University of Akron. The collaboration between the four of us will be key to this project's success.
