VIDEO: We Can Be Everyday Heroes

Everyday Heroes is an exciting, interactive playspace with a hands-on series of exhibits where younger kids can explore issues of kindness, listening and helping, compassion and everyday heroics by getting involved.

They start by donning a superhero cape and zooming around the Good Mood Movement Area, then move on to customizing their own masks, painting kindness rocks to give and share, building a better world with jumbo Legos, adding their name and handprint on the hero wall, and becoming their own superhero in a show they might put on in the Puppet Theatre. The accompanying Family Fun Series include story times, and a self-guided Everyday Hero Story Walk of the Museum's permanent exhibit. Open now through August 18. Details here.

VIDEO: These Students Know How To Stop The Hate

Words really do matter. You and I know it, and all our children know it. So to raise awareness and start turning the tide, the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage has been offering scholarships for the best essays from junior and senior high school student upstanders reflecting on and responding to intolerance and indifference.

"Over 11 years, we've reached 30,000 students, and given away over a million dollars," relates Darryl McNair, a member of the board of the Maltz Museum and chair of the Stop The Hate program. "It made me really think about the words that people say, and the tones that people use, and how much that actually does matter in every interaction that we have," says finalist Samuel Oguntoyinbo, a senior at Solon High School [pictured].

Here's the joke: The first Jewish president is taking the oath of office. A proud Jewish lady in the audience says, "You see that man with his hand in the air? His brother is a doctor!"

Jews and medicine have a long historical connection. Not only a conscious career choice, the hospitals they opened served a wide range of people, regardless of race, religion or creed.

Listen as Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage managing director David Schafer walks CoolCleveland through their new exhibition, Beyond Chicken Soup: Jews and Medicine in America, open through April 8, 2018.
