Before social media, the only way most people heard about the civil rights struggle was through the hard work of writers and photographers "embedded" into the movement, on the scene in the American South, bringing back scenes of racial division, homegrown terror, Ku Klux Klan attacks, and the heroic efforts of those working on the right side of history.

Listen as CoolCleveland speaks with Les Kelen, Executive Director of the Center for Documentary Expression & Art, and organizer of This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement, on display now at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage through 05.14.17.

Stop The Hate is a groundbreaking program to encourage students grades 6-12 to write essays on their experiences with injustice and the actions they are taking to become leaders and upstanders in the face of racism, gender bias, religious persecution and the innumerable small cruelties of daily life.

CoolCleveland spoke with some of the student finalists at the awards ceremony held at the Cleveland Museum of Art and discovered how they experienced and are fighting intolerance in their own lives.\\\

Former Israeli Mossad agent Avner Avraham spoke in an exclusive interview with CoolCleveland at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage about Operation Finale, the secret mission of the capture and trial of Adolf Eichmann.

Maltz Museum director Ellen Rudolph joined Avraham as they discuss the exhibition detailing the years-long covert operation code named "Operation Finale," which resulted in the capture and the sensational internationally-televised trial of the man responsible for millions perishing in the Nazi concentration camps during WWII. "Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann" is on exhibit February 19 – June 12, 2016 at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage.

CoolCleveland visits the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage and talks with violin maker Amnon Weinstein and his son Avi, who have spent decades restoring violins played in the Nazi concentration camps. Co-curator and author James A. Grymes helped organize the exhibition, on view at the Maltz Museum through 01.03.16.

The players did not survive, but the violins did.

And now, fully restored, these iconic violins are on exhibition at the Maltz, were featured in the Grand Opening concert at the new Maltz Performing Arts Center at CWRU featuring The Cleveland Orchestra, and are the subject of numerous talks, films and events as part of the Violins Of Hope collaborative project.

Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman MCed, Humble G Tha Fiddla & Euclid High School Drum Corps performed, as did the Cleveland Heights High School & Newton D. Baker School of Arts Youth Sing Out programs, and overseeing the festivities was Maltz Museum founder and Chair, Milton Maltz.
