Kate Gilmore has issues. In a good way.

Starting out as a sculptor and painter, she turned to using the strategies of performance and video. "The work I was making wasn't dynamic enough... I was interested in the chaos of the studio, and getting the humor out, and being witty, but also being smart and funny..."

Offering a refreshing perspective on macho action painters such as Jackson Pollock, Gilmore videotapes herself in a dress and high heels smashing pots of latex paint in a constructed tableaux, displaying the results alongside the video. "There is a feminist conversation with the work."

When Marjorie Talalay and partner Nina Castelli Sundell created The New Gallery in 1968 a block or two west of the Euclid Avenue location of what has become MOCA Cleveland's new museum, even their feverish imaginations might not have conceived a venue as edgy, disturbing and outrageous as this one.

Designed by Iranian architect Farshid Moussavi (in the pink layered dress in these photos), who must dream in four dimensions, the iconic four-story faceted gem on the high-traffic Triangle where Euclid meets Mayfield Road confounds easy comprehension and delivers intoxicating, vertiginous views from every angle, up down and sideways.

Dozens of bodies walking through the space helped to define the unparalleled "monumental" staircase, designed to be wandered up like an Italian hillside, perfect for art openings, special events and kids playing hide-and-seek. Partygoers commented that they looked forward to the time when all the art would be displayed, not realizing that work by an incredible 16 artists was on exhibit. Recognize yourself or a friend? Check out this amazing animation of MOCA Cleveland's new iconic building in University Circle's Uptown neighborhood, featuring an exclusive interview with executive director Jill Snyder.

This "cutting-edge Kunsthalle" was commissioned from architect Farshid Moussavi, and is her first museum, and her first building in the United States.

Featuring a monumental staircase that offers access and viewing platforms on all four floors, your animated flying journey through the new MOCA culminates at the impressive and unencumbered top-floor Main Gallery.

The $27M structure will be clad with 1354 panels of black Rimex steel which reflect and respond to atmospheric conditions, and the overall space is 44% larger than MOCA’s previous venue in the old Sears department store space on Carnegie Avenue, which they shared with the Cleveland Play House, who recently departed for the PlayhouseSquare district.
