What's it like to compete at the highest level, for some of the largest cash prizes ever?

Lewis Zou, a 16-year-old at Solon High School began formal piano studies at the age of 5, debuted at Severance Hall when he was 13 and made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 14.

He's up for some of the $40,000 in awards and scholarships, including the $20,000 cash first prize, and an opportunity to perform with The Cleveland Orchestra as part of the 2016 Cooper International Competition, free at Oberlin College through July 21.

Things are heating up at this year's Thomas & Evon Cooper International Competition. The alternating violin and piano competition for 13 - 18 year-olds, is a joint venture between the Oberlin Conservatory and The Cleveland Orchestra, with the final concert taking place on Fri 7/31 @ 8:00PM at Severance Hall.

CoolCleveland met up with 18 year-old competitor, Gallia Kastner, to get her insights on this year's prospects. With this being her last year, listen to her practice here, and then hopefully watch her compete for $10,000 dollars in the finals, with the full Cleveland Orchestra at her back!

CoolCleveland huddled with Oberlin Opera Theater Director Jonathon Field and Assistant Professor of Conducting Raphael Jimenez backstage at the dress rehearsal of La finta giardiniera where they marvelled at Mozart’s precocious talents at the age of 18 when he wrote this opera, and explained why a mysterious rabbit haunts this production.
