Outside of The Cleveland Museum of Art's May Show, the institution's long-standing and erstwhile local artist display, Cleveland-Parma resident Mabel Hewit, who died in 1984, never received much attention in her hometown. Currently The Cleveland Museum of Art is doing something about that with its "Midwest Modern: The Color Woodcuts of Mabel Hewit," a 76-piece exhibit currently open through Sun 10/24 at the Cleveland institution.

United Way's 2010 Campaign Co-Chairs David Goodman of Squire, Sanders and Richard Stovsky of PricewaterhouseCoopers have their work cut our from them. After just squeaking by in 2009, they have upped this year's goal to $40,100,000.
Check out the excitement as Thomas Mulready of Cool Cleveland visits with Goodman & Stovsky at the annual pancake breakfast on Public Square, where more than 9000 pancakes were cooked and served. The goal is ambitious, but the need is real. Last year, over 207,000 needy people call United Way's 211 Help Line for assistance with basic needs like food and shelter. AP Photojournalist and Pulitzer Prize Winner
From the red carpet at the Academy Awards to Barbaro winning the Kentucky Derby, from the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center Twin Towers to the 1992 Democratic National Convention at Madison Square Garden when Bill Clinton won the Presidential nomination, Amy Sancetta was there.
With camera in hand, eye at the lens, walking around these subjects looking at different angles, she was capturing the moment.
Her photographs grab your attention, the particular image tells a story. A Pulitzer-Prize winning photojournalist, she has worked full time for the Associated Press (AP) for 28 years.
Looking at this trim, middle aged woman about 5'6" in height, it is hard to believe she has lugged 40 pounds of camera equipment with her on assignments. "It goes with the job," shrugs Sancetta, "but the best part is I get paid to see..." Read more from Susan Schaul here

The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll Comes to Cleveland
Back in 1999, on a cold Chicago February day, I stood in line for several hours in front of the Tower Records on Clark Street with my new musician and artist boyfriend Rob.
At least 100 people stood in front of us, with many more behind us, forming a curved queue spiraling around the small park adjacent to the two story urban retail mall and its adjacent staircase to the front doors of the second floor music shop.
This was before iPods and cell phones. This was before people truly lived in their own worlds and, therefore, to pass the time, had to make conversation with their neighbors.
Some of these folks were in their twenties, some in their forties, some older and some in between.
Some dressed that day in their usual Gap inspired beige attire, while others went full punk: black torn clothes, pink hair, Doc Martins, Harley jackets, the works... Read more from Alex Sukhoy here
Author's Note: Last week I stated I would be writing a column this week entitled The Myth of the Mandingo. While I indeed did write that piece, due to the serious nature of the challenges we're facing as a city in regards to the Warehouse District, I felt the timing is inappropriate to run a light-hearted look at race and sexual politics. I will consider running it in the future.
Culture changes very slowly... and if not prodded, encouraged, planned and properly managed little or no cultural change will occur at all. Charles Darwin accurately wrote: "It's not the strongest of the species that survives... nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change."
Here's what we in Cleveland are faced with: A number of systemic cultural changes will have to take place, and rather quickly, if we are to save the Warehouse District and prevent it from going the way of the Flats. Our collective failure to do so will only perpetuate the belief that we deserve the scorn and opprobrium that has been heaped upon our fair city for decades, and will set us up for future failure....
