It's our choice if we want our public officials to be on the right side of history, as they were in Toronto when their Waterfront Development Corp set aside politics and designed a fabulous waterfront. Is it possible here? Of course it is. We just have to decide to do it. Read more in our continuing Sixth City series. We can certainly build off last week's Sustainability Summit, which is reviewed below, and off smaller development successes such as the Oddfellows Hall on Lorain or the new Red Stage at the Beck Cafe. We preview the return of ballet to Blossom after 20 years, Mansfield likes what he sees on the street; Roldo- not so much. Joffrey Ballet comes to Cleveland
Interview & preview

Robert Joffrey founded the Joffrey Ballet in 1956 and shaped it over the years into a different American ballet company with interesting individual dancers and bold, visionary choices of repertory. Some of those repertory choices were very contemporary.

The Joffrey was the first ballet company to commission a rock and roll ballet, Astarte (1967). It was the Joffrey that gave Twyla Tharp her first commission for a ballet, the first crossover ballet (Deuce Coupe (1973) to music by the Beach Boys). Prince donated his music to the Joffrey, making Billboards (1993) possible.

The Joffrey carries special significance. It was one of the few American companies that didn't attempt that dubious goal of trying to out do the Russian ballet companies on their own terms...

Family Affair

Michael Fleming first noticed the solid brick facade and big, storefront windows of the former Oddfellows Hall on Lorain Avenue when he was training for a marathon. Wedged between a storefront church and a biker shop, the building seemed like a diamond in the rough.

"I was running one day, and the building jumped out at me," says Fleming. "Lorain may be shabby and a bit down-at-the-heels, but it's a very pretty street, and it's affordable."

Fleming saw that the property was for sale, and one day he ventured inside. The first thing he saw was the mahogany bar, covered in dust. That's when he fell in love...

Since, over the years, I've been vociferous in regards to condemning the lack of minority workers on road and bridge jobs in African-American communities, I need to be just as vocal in praise of what I saw on Monday morning (Aug. 17) as I drove down Kinsman Avenue.

A three-quarter mile stretch, from E. 93rd to E. 79th Streets is being repaved, and, while I wasn't able to make an accurate count while driving, it seems that about 40 workers were on the job and - wonder of wonders - a full third of them were workers of color...

2019 Sustainability Summit

GREEN The 2009 Cleveland Sustainability Summit held at the Cleveland Convention Center Wed 8/12- Fri 8/14 was an amazing success. As a participant in the three day event, I found myself thoroughly engaged in the Appreciative Inquiry process; something that I had never done before. The energy, commitment, leadership, and passion to empower people to change our communities still resonate within me.

The collaboration between the participants, mostly strangers at the time, proved to be an enlightening opportunity to learn about how art, culture, manufacturing, natural resources, watershed management, access to healthcare for everyone, job creation, and much more are intricately interwoven under the umbrella of sustainability...
