More and more artists and creative individuals, finding themselves increasingly frustrated from the lack of opportunities and support in their communities, are beginning to organize, co-operate and explore new avenues. One such emerging, active group of local artists opted for a do-it-yourself approach attempting to take on the art of business or rather the business of art into their own hands
With many members across the board from Cleveland and its environs SEAN, which stands for Self-Employed Artists' Network is designed to bring together artists to discuss concerns, issues and ideas related to self-employment. In addition to informal discussions amongst artists, SEAN invites guest speakers to discuss the business needs of self-employed artists. Meetings are free of charge and no registration is required
Last Thursday almost 20 artists met to exchange thoughts and ideas in an informal and friendly atmosphere. Guest speaker Eleanor Le Beau?, arts writer for Scene gave an illuminating presentation on the subject of press releases.
While adopting an informal and open approach, Eleanor flanked her target with some very interesting facts, handouts, practical tips and suggestions - most stemming from her invaluable practical experience, not to mention some of her inside sources. Despite the plethora of info flowing about, artists were encouraged to comment and participate with their own feedback making the experience all the more enjoyable and informative.
Hopefully more individuals will improvise on such an encouraging event and kindly offer their own insight and help towards an ever-growing audience of local artists and creative entrepreneurs.
SEAN Monthly Meetings take place every 3rd Thursday of the Month from 7-9PM at Art House. Art House employs Cleveland area artists to instruct visual and creative arts classes. Located in historic Brooklyn Center, which is home to a growing arts community, Art House is currently renovating a 1948 Quonset building and an 1885 Victorian house for offices, classes, lecture rooms, studios, and gallery space.
