Who are the real stars of today? You won't find a word in Cool Cleveland about the "superstar" singer who recently passed away. In fact, we're not even going to waste the bytes to mention his name. Instead, we offer some superstars of our own from right around the corner and right around the region. Jeff Biasella turns you on to the Cleveland City Stars, a sports team you can really get behind. We quit whining and start wining with Claudia J. Taller's spotlight on superstar Ohio wineries & vineyards, just in time for tasting. Kelly Ferjutz profiles WKSU's Al Bartholet and the immensely successful Folk Alley, while Mansfield tells us why his recent national TV appearances will almost certainly not make him a star. And Roldo gives a history lesson of a political star who's star may be rising again. Helping people in need is Adoption Network Cleveland, who've asked us to host their fun Lanes for Change bowling party on Sat 8/8, and we hope to see a lot of our Cool Cleveland friends there. After all, Cleveland, you're the real stars. --Thomas Mulready

Cleveland City Stars
Catch them on the rise

I need to get something off my chest. I've been avoiding saying this since 2006. But with the help of a therapist, the night terrors and panic attacks have finally subsided. I'm ready to publicly admit it; I like soccer.

It started with the 2006 World Cup. A massive heat wave hit Ohio, my house had no air conditioning, and the TV remote disappeared a couple days earlier. The first match of the World Cup was on after Sports Center.

My roommate and I argued about which one of us was getting up to change the channel. I didn't budge and neither did he. We watched the first match out of mutual spite. We watched the rest because we wanted to...

We're Wining Again
Ohio Wineries Gaining Respect, Quality by the Year

Living in Ohio these days, it's hard not to notice all the new wineries. While anyone can buy some juice, pour it into bottles, and label it as their own, the wineries that grow their own grapes are the ones to be celebrated. Vintage Ohio at Lake Metroparks Farmpark in Kirtland (held this Fri 8/7 - Sat 8/8), features the wines of Ohio in one location for the cost of admission and the time it takes to stand in lines. Vintage Ohio allows those who enjoy native wines and those who enjoy European-style wines to re-experience the wines they have eschewed and it's a great introduction to wineries from Wolf Creek Winery in Akron to Marietta Wine Cellars in Marietta. The festival offers entertainment, exhibits, gourmet food, crafts, and cooking lessons in addition to the wines.

But it's also a far cry from experiencing all of the wineries of the Lake Erie Vines and Wines Trail of Northeast Ohio along the lake...

Folk Alley and the Betsy-Mobile

Cleveland and the Northeast Ohio region are so rich in the musical variety available here. Of course, we have the Cleveland Orchestra at the top of the list, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, plus a veritable triangle of jazz flourishing between Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown. But then, you may not have known there’s another musical form with a strong world-wide presence, originating almost in the middle of the jazz triangle. Care to guess what it is? It’s Folk. As in Folk Alley, the brainchild of WKSU-FM (89.5) the radio station of Kent State University.

What? How? When? Well—it’s not exactly the most direct path, but it all came together through a chain of linked circumstances, beginning back in the 60s when a youngster by the name of Al Bartholet fell in love with radio...

Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle
Chris Hedges
Nation Books

Every once and again I come across a book that is so spot-on, so illuminating, so captures the Zeitgeist... that I'm almost jealous that I didn't write it myself. This feeling quickly subsided as I began to revel in the fact that someone so talented gave form, shape and substance to feelings I've long harbored.

Such is the case with Pulitzer Prize winner Chris Hedges' most recent work, Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle, a work that undoubtedly will resonate with a wide audience of readers. The book has the smell of "bestseller" all over it...

You could hear the envy in his voice as he grumbles that when Jeff Johnson walks into a room all eyes moved to him. He takes the air out of the room, said a friendly rival.

Jeff Johnson had that effect on people. Youthful, movie-star looks and a smile to go along. Maybe he still has the magic. We'll soon see...

Police State?

An article I wrote for The Daily Beast (which was featured on Cool Cleveland) regarding the brouhaha surrounding the arrest of Harvard professor Skip Gates snagged me an appearance on the Today Show last month... most likely my first and last appearance on that program.

It wasn't that I flubbed any lines or busted any verbs - I'm a pretty fair speaker and know the King's English - it was what I said that will most likely preclude me from having another 15 seconds of fame...
