My concern with the Steelyard Commons development is that all of the focus seems to be centered on Wal-mart which appears to be 90,000 square feet at the most. This development will encompass 132 acres and will have 1 million square feet in retail. Walmart will be approximately 10% of the total development. I am afraid that the Plain Dealer, City Hall, and Mr. Schneider are intentionally directing our focus to a small part of the overall project. I think it is more important to insist that the Economic Impact Study that City Council requested be done very soon. Since the start date for the project is March 1st, I think that it is imperative that the public have the Economic Impact Study to see what the overall impact of this project will be to the surrounding neighborhoods. Again, the Plain Dealer has told us that this is all we are going to get and if we don't take it no other businesses will come in Cleveland. I am so tired of the so-called leaders of this community telling all of us that we do not need to have any public discourse or that we are unable to help in the decision-making process. Please just sit in the corner little lady and we will tell you what is good for you. It is time that this community look beyond the short term fixes and consider the ramifications the decisions we make today will have on future generations of Clevelanders. Amazing that our ancestors made 150 year plans, but our leaders have trouble thinking beyond 3-5 years. Seven years to them seems like long term planning. Maybe we should take a page from Iriquois law-- make no decision unless seven generations are considered. (Our forefathers thought that the Iriquois laws had such merit that they used them to draft our constitution.) Maybe it is time to slow down, take a deep breath, and stop believing that no one will want to come to Cleveland. On a more positive note, it was heartening to read about Case Western Reserve's new ideas in collaboration with our world class medical facilities.
