Still
Tremont, for example, in some ways Cleveland's original artist community, is stronger than ever, yet CC writer Josh Usmani, with extensive quotes from artists, gallerists and curators, questions whether it can still be called an arts community. Roldo looks back on the "spontaneous combustion" in Glenville 45 years ago this week, and wonders if some things are still the same. Mansfield laments the cancellation of the Coventry street fair due to social media chatter, and suggest strong measures.
Still, there's so much cool stuff going on right now in the middle of the summer in the middle of the coolest town in the world, we can hardly fit it all in: Klamor at NWT; Pezmania in Independence; ecoawareness at at the Burning River Fest; Bad Racket's Summer Concert Series at the BottleHouse, the Grog & elsewhere; speed dating for hikers & bikers at Holden; punk rock provocateurs at My Mind's Eye; VibrantNEO at 10 venues region-wide; roots rocker Nikki Hill at The Winchester.
C. Ellen Connally becomes the historian she is with an appreciation of Cleveland's (and possibly America's) greatest Mayor Tom Johnson. My buddy Jim Levin throws his geniocity behind a truly city-wide One World Festival at the Cultural Gardens in a few weeks; see our video. Play our #Hashtag Game and win free buzz for your favorite event this weekend; just #CoolCleveland on Instagram or Twitter today & tell us what you think is cool.

Every time I go out to Tremont I see more people at bars and restaurants than galleries.
Don't get me wrong -- Tremont is actually one of my favorite places to enjoy drinks on patios with friends. However, there aren't many galleries in Tremont anymore and most of those are more boutique than exhibition space.
Even Tremont's Art Walk doesn't have much art anymore. So, is Tremont still the artist community it once was?

Cuyahoga County Councilman Dan Brady is a great admirer of Cleveland's 35th mayor -- Tom L. Johnson. Brady is not alone in his admiration of the man who served as the Mayor of Cleveland from 1901 - 1909. Johnson, both literally and figuratively, brought Cleveland into the 20th century.
His accomplishments are such that many historians rate him not just Cleveland's greatest mayor but America's greatest mayor -- ever...

The news that the Coventry street fair, which was scheduled for Sunday, July 21, was cancelled by the City of Cleveland Heights due to "chatter on social media that talked of violence," should be disturbing to all of us -- this being the second year in a row the event has been cancelled....

Really enjoyed the discussion and hope it continues. The crux of the matter, I feel, has less to do with the gentrification of Tremont and more to do with the larger problem of Clevelanders liking to look, more than they like to buy....

MANSFIELD: Farm Credit - Will Anything Ever Change? Wait. So because 15 years ago some black farmers successfully sued the USDA for discrimination, and now this completely separate financial cooperative includes no black people in attendance at some Cleveland conference, the group is racist?....

ROLDO: Free-Riding on Cleveland, Cuyahoga Taxpayers Sorry, RB, but I don't agree. Having major league sports teams these days is just a cost of doing business for a major city, almost a utility. And because of the competitive dynamics, the cost of keeping them necessarily (however seemingly unfair) involves these sweetheart deals.....
