What do you do when you've got an indie film in search of an afternoon audience? You invite your friends over to watch it! Which is exactly what Alex Michaels did. He gathered some of his filmmaking friends together and threw a party called Prelude 2 Cinema? at a Karate studio in Warrensville Hts on 4/13. Michaels has been writing as long as he can remember. It was a natural progression for him to start writing screenplays. When no one would make his films, he made them himself. Currently, he's working on a TV show that's a cross between CSI and the X-files called Out of Darkness, a TV series set in Cleveland's fictional 7th District about a female Latino homicide detective whose body is possessed by a shadow-like creature that devours criminals. Spooky sci-fi plots were the themes of trailers for Shades and The Last Hour, both being produced locally. In a completely different vein was Mighty like a Rose by Alex Morrison. Mighty like a Rose is a visually beautiful movie that presents a collage of portraits woven as a visual narrative overlaid with sound tracks of phone conversations. This short lives up to its subtitle: Meditations on Being Human. Alex is also curator of Foxgrape Cinema, which is looking for a home. Foxgrape is a microcinema, which is a worldwide movement to "curate, exhibit, distribute and promote a new era of emerging and innovate international moving image artists whose deeply personal and culturally relevant works are typically marginalized by the mainstream entertainment industry." If you have a venue and would be interested in sponsoring frequent gatherings to view independent films, please contact Alex Michaels mcfrank12@aol.com for more info. Providing entertainment on 4/13 was chanteuse Antoinette Tredanary, who's smooth, sultry voice makes old standards sound new again. This event highlighted just a few of the area's entrepreneurial artists who are crucial to the future of Cleveland's Creative Class. (:divend:)
