The Movie That Saved Cain Park

You may remember hearing something about the 1980 movie Those Lips, Those Eyes - maybe that it was filmed in the Cleveland area.

But what you may not know is that it was not only filmed here, in and around Cain Park in Cleveland Heights, but that it actually helped to save Cain Park.

Something else may have eventually come along to save Cain Park, but the production company responsible for Those Lips, Those Eyes actually invested a lot of money to restore Cain Park's amphitheater back to working condition so that they could shoot the film there.

Those Lips, Those Eyes is about a place that is just like Cain Park was in the 1950s. The movie, starring Frank Langella, Thomas Hulce and Glynnis O'Connor, is a coming-of-age story about a young man who works behind the scenes at a summer theater like Cain Park was in those days.

In the late '50s and '60s, TV stars would appear in Cain Park productions of Broadway musicals, and top-name entertainers, such as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mathis, Jerry Lewis and Sammy Davis, Jr., would come in for one- or two-nighters. But, for several reasons, by the late '70s the amphitheater had fallen into disrepair...

The Missing Demographic: Black Males

The fairly recent brouhaha over the use of the term "Negro" on 2010 Census Forms was mild compared to the racially-tinged storm that should be currently brewing in Washington in regards to the upcoming counting of all Americans. It seems as if one demographic is already being excluded.

The Census Bureau's very sophisticated website features vignettes of people from all over the country - 30 citizens in all - talking about what it means to be Americans.

There is Breanne & Dave (a couple who are into roof gardening), Neme (a nursing student originally from Togo), Grazina (the owner of a Lithuanian restaurant), and Hilba (the manager of a surgery clinic), but one population group is glaring only by its absence: black males... there is not one single black male featured on the entire website.

Yet, the Census folks steadfastly maintain they want to count all Americans...

Medcalf & Lock Split the Bill

Lisa K. Lock and Michael Medcalf, two Cleveland dancer/choreographers, split the bill at Cleveland Public Theater's Big Box this weekend. Earlier last month we met with Lock and Medcalf for interviews and preview showings. Both were immersed in works in progress.

Though she emphasized that CONCENTRIC CYCLES was unfinished, Lock showed substantial portions of her new piece, which is concerned with passing time, memories, mistakes, and second chances. In her program notes, Lock says the dress stands for "memories made visible." With its detachable train, the dress limits or embellishes Lock's movement as she chooses, and even unlit in the limited space of the preview showing, the color and fabric were visually stunning. Cool Cleveland: We've only seen one new piece of your choreography since you returned to Cleveland. Are you using new compositional methods?
Michael Medcalf: Not new compositional methods so much, but now I'm afforded the time and opportunity to explore creating work. So, when I saw the proposal for CPT's Big Box 10, I went back and forth debating whether or not I wanted to do it. I think I'm more interested in exploring ways of generating movement and seeing what the outcome is as opposed to actual choreography.
