2003—The Year of the Library No fewer than five communities will have Library levies on the ballot on May 6, another excellent reason to mark your calendar for voting in this off-season election. If you live in Cleveland (Issue 2), Lakewood (Issues 6 &7), Westlake (Issue 14), Medina (no issue #), or Ravenna (Issue 8), you have another reason for voting in a couple of weeks. Most of the levies are designed to address the exploding popularity of libraries as sources for DV Ds?, compact discs, and especially computer and technology resources. (For example, in Lakewood, you can borrow up to 35—count 'em—compact discs at one time, for free). Citizens have also discovered that libraries can also be used for community meeting centers and after-school activities, and are a huge boon for the increasing number of small businesses, free agents and part-time workers that are becoming a major part of our local economy. The nice thing about a spring-time election: fewer people voting means we can activate our base and win the vote with fewer raw numbers. Make sure you vote, and bring one other person with you.
