[title of show] @ 14th Street Theatre 5/2 [title of show] seemed as quirky and funny in Cleveland as it did last summer when I saw it on Broadway. When authors Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell sat down to write a musical and ended up writing a musical about writing a musical (and watch for my forthcoming musical about writing a review about writing a musical about writing a musical) they might not have realized just how well it could be translated by a fresh quartet of actors. The answer is: extraordinarily well--especially if the audience is a bunch of theatre crazies (the way it was in NYC). [Could it be that every town in America is packed with folks who love the stage? Most likely.] In this Baldwin-Wallace College/ Playhouse Square production directed by Victoria Bussert, J. R. Bruno (Hunter) and Emma Ruck (Susan) gave exuberantly delightful performances that seemed completely natural as they “became” their characters. Dustin Jesberger (Jeff) and Maggie Roach (Heidi) brought humor and ease to their roles. Keyboard player Ryan Garrett made the charming most of his (mostly) silent role. It was 90 minutes of fun that seemed like 15 minutes.
