"Uncool"
Richey Piiparinen gets all this. And more. He sees that the "psychogeographic attraction" of Cleveland's real rust belt chic is one reason more people are moving to Cuyahoga County from Chicago & Brooklyn than vice versa. It turns out that uncool is the new cool. And we have it in spades.
For example, where else can you find the Mid-West Reggae Fest at Nelson Ledges alongside the Revolution Brass Band at Mahall's; while a big ass papermaking workshop rides along with the Cleveland Flea; the same weekend as the Jewish Food & Culture Festival bumps up against a vegan book club and a Polish picnic; while the Cleveland Trombone Collective competes for your attention with The Numbers Band at Akron's Downtown@Dusk. Ride the Towpath in your PJ's, bring your old dog for ice cream at the Summer Scoop, catch a ukulele star at The Kent Stage, and learn how to ferment your food. Cool? I don't know. But it's real. And it's all happening this week. In cool Cleveland.
Oh, and don't forget you can get all this on our mobile app. Plus, you could win $20 like Lisa Alleman did this week. How cool is that? --Thomas Mulready

The statement speaks to the reality that Cleveland and other Rust Belt cities can't shrink their way to economic growth, as in-migration is needed.
On that score, there's some indication of Rust Belt demographic inflows...

Cleveland Connection is an exhibition at The Gallery at Lakeland Community College juried by local, award-winning artist Dana Oldfather and featuring 70 works by almost 40 artist-members of the Cleveland West Art League & Ohio Art League.
Says Oldfather, "Choosing award winners for the Cleveland Connection exhibition was a difficult decision, as I imagine choosing a best in show must be for most jurors in an open call situation where no terms are stipulated for submissions other than the general geographic location of an artist's studio...

A Love Affair with Downtown Begins on Hope Avenue My memories of Downtown as a young child was looking up in the world. I remember the great smells of roasted nuts, the hustle and all the titillating store fronts on prospect ave. But it was always dirty, full of the grit from the flats and discarded paper dancing in the wake of a Cleveland Transit Bus....

Great piece about a great city! My memories are of Playhouse Square, Publix Books, Boukair's Ice Cream, Sterling Lindner's and not the Tower but the busy Rapid station beneath it off a bustling Public Square. Thanks.....

Is Tremont Still an Art Community? As the former owners of Eye Candy Gallery, it behooves us to add our comments to this discussion. For eleven years, Eye Candy Gallery was the oldest and and longest tenured FULL time gallery in Tremont... Almost from the very beginning, it became quite obvious that it was "every man for himself." I say this without rancor....

MANSFIELD: Taking Back Our Streets - Part 2 Interracial dating is becoming the norm... if not the preferred vehicle for today's active youths. Perhaps that and the fact that President Obama is an EXTREMELY POSITIVE role model for both black and white Americans....
