Unexpected
Neon talent Jeff Chiplis' art is seemingly simple yet complex at the same time ("dazzling, frigid"); catch our feature and his opening at Busta this week. At another end of the spectrum, Molly Pamela installs Heavy Petals at BUCKBUCK: her revealing interview is below. The Callaloo Cafe & Bar is officially open on Waterloo, The Devil's Music opens at CPH, Winter Brite Festival returns, NWT throws a sock hop at Trinity, and there's death pop/electronica at Pat's in the Flats. Oh, and another lucky mobile app user won $20. As expected.
And yet, with all this creativity swirling around, commentator Richey Piiparinen thinks "Creative Class" is too narrow an ambition for Cleveland. That's unexpected. Or was it? --Thomas Mulready

The question of how you "become" as a city has been weighing on me lately. Is it enough to get people back in the emptiness? Is it enough to pretty the derelict?
I mean, is the trajectory of Cleveland's success simply a collection of micro-everythings, start-ups, and occupancy rates? That is, is Cleveland's reward simply the benefit of being creatively classed?
I hope not. It won't work. Here is why...
