RideUNITED, the new regional bicycle tour event will be held Sun 6/5 and is designed to promote healthy living through cycling and to support the health and human service programs funded by United Way in this region.
Watch the video as Dr. Ned Hill, United Way Volunteer and CSU Professor of Economic Development and Dean of the Levin College of Urban Affairs, enthusiastically describes the five different scenic bike route options which allow riders to tour such inspiring areas as Tremont, Steelyard Commons, and the Scenic Byways and Towpath Trail, with its amazing flora, covered bridges, canal scenes and sights such as Indian Mound, Beaver Marsh, Blue Heron Falls and Horseshoe Pond.
The event is a true regional collaboration between Cleveland State University, United Way of Greater Cleveland, United Way of Summit County, the University of Akron, the City of Cleveland, the City of Akron, the National Park Service and the MetroParks systems in both Cuyahoga and Summit Counties.

Robin Cottingham, Senior VP of KeyBank and the chair of United Way's Community Investment committee, was as blown away as we were. Each year, the United Way of Greater Cleveland teams up with the Cleveland Browns on their Hometown Huddle to help inspire kids with their national Play 60 project to get kids playing outside for 60 minutes a day. But we had seen nothing like this.
As you can see, this year, hundreds of volunteers spent the day tearing down and totally rebuilding Karamu House's play space into a 44,000 sf wonderland of swings, slides, see-saws, a climbing wall and vertical wave steps that were actually designed by the kids at a Design Day in August. National partners KaBOOM have helped build 1800 of these play spaces, and on 10/19, over 250 volunteers just like Robin were on hand, along with more than a few strong Browns players to do the labor. United Way's 2010 Campaign Co-Chairs David Goodman of Squire, Sanders and Richard Stovsky of PricewaterhouseCoopers have their work cut our from them. After just squeaking by in 2009, they have upped this year's goal to $40,100,000.
Check out the excitement as Thomas Mulready of Cool Cleveland visits with Goodman & Stovsky at the annual pancake breakfast on Public Square, where more than 9000 pancakes were cooked and served. The goal is ambitious, but the need is real. Last year, over 207,000 needy people call United Way's 211 Help Line for assistance with basic needs like food and shelter.
