Unquiet and Concerto for Second Fiddle
Doug McKean & the Stuntmen

Doug McKean is a familiar name to people who scrounge the Cleveland music scene. The former member of the Whiskeyhounds returns with two brand new records that follow up 2006's hot CD Heels Up. Last time out, McKean was drifting away from punk-inspired rock sounds and floating into "a soul and Stonesy rock territory." Unquiet and Concerto for Second Fiddle are prolific in a Ryan Adams sort of way, with the former offering cinematic soundscapes and great roots-rock and Americana idioms; and the latter digging up a more straight-ahead rock sound. Unquiet tunes like "Trail of Crumbs" and "Witchcraft" are trail-dusty and wistfully lonely sounding; the in-your-face flavors of "Searchlight" and punchy, almost Elvis Costello-esque "Like Wilkins Micawber" are head boppers to be sure. And there's something about his voice that is at once immediate and familiar. And comfortable. McKean performs in celebration of the release of both discs Sat 10/11 at the Beachland Ballroom on Waterloo; his shape-shifting band will feature members of the Magpies (formerly the Whiskeyhounds), The Jack Fords, and Chris Allen and the Guilty Hearts. And if cuts from both of these discs are any indication, this will be one hot show. Visit them online at http://www.myspace.com/dougmckeanandthestuntmen.
