WCL Vnotes? Last night, 7/15, WCLV's program for kids, Klassical Kids, received a special award at the annual meeting of the board of The Cleveland Music School Settlement. The Fine Arts Society of Missouri Southern State has given's its 2002 Outstanding Achievement in Music Education trophy for educational radio programming. Jeff Skibbe, the general manager of KXMS in Joplin, Missouri, presented the award to the program's host Eric Benjamin, to WCLV and to the Music School Settlement, the sponsors of the program. Klassical Kids is heard Saturdays at 8:10AM, and there are many indications that the program has as many grandparents listening as grandkids. WCLV 104.9 FM has been broadcasting The Cleveland Orchestra since 1965, making this the longest running orchestra series in the nation. At the same time, Robert Conrad, the host of the Orchestra broadcasts, has racked up a record for himself. Research indicates that he has been an orchestra commentator longer than anyone in the history of American radio. The Severance Hall concerts are over for the season, and for the Sunday afternoon broadcasts by the Orchestra through next October, WCLV will be presenting a series of concerts featuring archival material including the legendary July, 1970, concert at Blossom with Leonard Bernstein conducting Mahler's Sym # 2 Resurrection. This will be heard on Sun 9/21, at 4PM. This Sunday through 8/10, the station is presenting a series of concerts by the late Robert Shaw, ending up with Bach's Mass in b. This concert begins at 3:30PM. Other highlights: two Symphony Hall concerts conducted by George Szell, Leopold Stokowski's 1971 (and last) appearance with the Orchestra, and Eugene Ormandy conducting Beethoven's 9th Symphony. This Sun 7/20, WRMR 1420 AM presents the first of two Sundays at Somerset recordings featuring Ernie Krivda and his Band. The program is free and takes place at Somerset Point, on Northfield Road at the Van Aiken intersection in Shaker Heights. The 1-hour program, hosted by WRMR's Carl Reese, will be broadcast at 4PM on 7/27. Somerset Point, a retirement home, will be serving refreshments. Limited seating, call 752-5600 for reservations.
