Not so long ago the place was a hellhole, but that's history - now it's scrubbed down and sports heavy wooden tables and chairs ala 1967 high school cafeterias. Don't worry about the cops sitting a couple tables away - one of them owns the place.
All cuisine served comes straight from the market and it's completely fresh - just ask your server and they're happy to tell you where your meal came from, in case you want to grab the ingredients to fricassee, fry, bake or boil within the confines of your own home.
The menu consists of several soups and appetizers (we suggest the sausage stuffed Hungarian peppers), and entrees like grilled chicken breasts, fried chicken, quiche of the day, Lake Erie perch and daily specials. When we visited the special was Tilapia Mornay with basmati rice. There's sandwiches too, with 10 selections including vegetable melts, Ruebens and BLTs. We sampled the roast beef with horseradish, caramelized onion, and Blue cheese which rocked quite nicely. Make sure you save room for the apple pie - a homemade recipe from Mike's mom. Invite Mike to your table and he'll share his kitchen war stories, but don't be surprised if he steals some of your fries. Prices are moderate with entrees ranging from $5.95 to $8.25, the aforementioned fries will set ya back a buck ninety-five. The West Side Market Cafe has a decent selection of brews and wine as well. And while there, we noticed a couple chefs from other Cleveburgh establishments doing lunch - 'nuff said. Bon Appetit. from Cool Cleveland contributor Michael Salinger
