The Very Best of the Whiskey Daredevils
Whiskey Daredevils
Knock Out Records
If you think you've heard this before, your confusion is easy to understand. And also quite intentional. With previous efforts The Whiskey Daredevils Greatest Hits, The Essential Whiskey Daredevils and Whiskey Daredevils Old Favorites coming in rapid succession, the confusion is understandable. But they're all completely different records that belie their titles... and all good enough to be greatest hits packages. Suffice it to say the band's tongue-in-cheek, cowpunk ethos and manic blend of blues-trash, surf music and rockabilly always stands up well.
Greg Miller (vocals), Ken Miller (bass), Gary Siperko (guitar) and Leo P. Love (drums) really kick out the jams in this 12-track fun-fest. Plenty of attitude here, crunching guitarisms and wry vocals make this a no-brainer. Highlights include the blasphemous opener "Friend in Jesus," the hard-bopping "Baby Won't Chew Dance Wit Me," "Skunk Weed" and the head-scratcher "On the Cuyahoga." Recorded with noted producer John Smerek (Kid Rock, Detroit Cobras, Bob Seger) at Detroit's White Room Studio, this is another keeper from one of Cleveland's most consistent bands.
And for the record, I'm calling it now -- next time out, expect a two-disc release from these guys called Whiskey Daredevils Anthology... or Then and Now: The Complete Whiskey Daredevils.
I'm just sayin'.
