Class Warfare? I have an issue with Roldo's comments here. While some of his concerns may be valid, I get a little tired of the class warfare thing. The "have's" versus the "have not's". Is profit a bad thing? Why do outsider's invest money in Cleveland if not to make a profit?
If Dan Gilbert made a deal to invest in Cleveland, and part of the deal was that he gets a tax abatement, what's wrong with that? Would he have invested in Cleveland otherwise?
And to say that the public and or other businesses - restaurants, bars, & hotels- don't benefit from the events being held at Gateway is ridiculous! Have you ever attended one of these events to see how out-of-towners are crowding these establishments and the streets, spending their money here in Cleveland?
And these venues are paid for by the public??? Through the sin tax??? The sin tax that the voters approved added $.36 to a case of beer in Cuyahoga County. Ever notice that a case of beer purchased in Cuyahoga County is no more expensive than a case of beer purchased in adjacent counties??? That's because the beer companies lowered prices in Cuyahoga County to protect their wholesalers and retailers. Otherwise consumers would buy their beer out of the county and businesses in county would lose a lot of revenue. So the beer companies are paying for the venues.
