He left behind a tendentious but oddly eloquent letter, which the Cleveland Press, to its credit, saw fit to publish. It read in part...:

It seems as if my prediction turned out to be accurate: Sixty-two individuals, a record number, filed to run for a seat on Cleveland's City Council this year, and I'm hearing similar stories - admittedly anecdotal, no scientific study has been done that I'm aware of - from acquaintances that live in urban areas around the country...

In preparation for Paul Taylor Dance Company's annual concert in Northeast Ohio, we lined up a phone interview with one of the company's senior dancers, Robert Kleinendorst, who spoke to us from City Center in NYC where he and the company were preparing for a performance.
Cool Cleveland: Tell us about the upcoming Cleveland concert.
Robert Kleinendorst: Well, first of all it's a really great program for seeing the entire gamut of Paul's work. "Brandenburgs" is very classical with lots of jumps and beautiful lines and partnering. "Changes" is set to the Mamas and the Papas and it's very audience accessible; it has fun social dancing -- the swim, the mashed potato, the frug and all that stuff is in there...

We miss the snow in Cleveland Miss the fact that I had access to EVERYTHING in Cleveland. Great museums, sports, and call me crazy ... SNOW!! Lived in Chagrin Falls for 6 years and loved it - general Cleveland area for 12 years. Chagrin Falls is a world all it's own. Husband's job brought us to South Carolina, great place and all, but part of me still misses Ohio!

Don't knock down a thriving community John Stark Bellamy II uncovers a history that provides us with insight into why Cleveland is Cleveland - dull, unimaginative and punitive leadership. I didn't see much of this 1996 Cleveland, having come here with a family in 1965. I knew sketchily about the police actions, brought about by a frightened Establishment with the cooperation of the news media establishment, meaning at that time the Press and Plain Dealer, where I worked.
The top Cleveland corporate and media leaders - in charge at CWRU - killed what could have been a thriving community when back in the 1960s they pushed away and sometimes crushed a youth culture that could have flowered into what the Establishment tries to create now with money - a livable, thriving, lively community. You don't do it with condos and false-fronted retail. If it doesn't come naturally, it won't come. Thankfully, they weren't able to destroy Little Italy.
But we are great here in thinking we can buy a city culture via developers. The highly subsidized Triangle building in University Circle is a perfect example of the failure. Now, they'll knock it down but not sure anything worthwhile will take its place.
Awaiting more from Bellamy. Thanks, John.
