Democracy
The people have spoken, and once again Ohio's voice was heard strongest of all. Luckily, Cool Cleveland's got the election wrap, a celebration of the new Brothers Lounge, a review of a serious play at Karamu, an eye-opening look at the Clinic's medical innovation summit, and a big disagreement with David Byrne. And let's not forget who all the voting was for: our children and our children's children. We spotlight a local fantasy writer, pick some hot kids events for this week, and even host our first Cool Cleveland KIDS party (not the political kind) this Thursday. Bring your favorite kid or two and remind yourself just why we're all shouting so hard. --Thomas Mulready
Cool Cleveland's post-election wrap
Barack Obama Wins Presidency
Even for the most seasoned political junkies, the two-year buildup to this historic election cycle was a lot to take in. Enthusiasm spilled over into fatigue for some by the end of last week; for others, weariness came on a whole lot sooner than that. By late last night, the buzzwords "exit polls," "congressional bloodbath," "bellwether," "swing states," "icing states" and "The Big Three" (Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio) had been trotted out like show ponies on hourly parade. Political robocalls, deluged polls, long lines and malfunctioning voting machines had reared their ugly heads and snagged their usual headlines. Pundits furrowed their brows and tallied numbers repeatedly. And that's saying nothing of the contentious elections for our own region -- the run by Deborah Sutherland against incumbent Peter Lawson Jones for Cuyahoga County Commissioner... Jim Trakas focusing on dethroning perennial prez nominee Dennis Kucinich from the House... payday lending restrictions, casino gambling and state constitutional augmentation... But when the returns came in, that two-year build up brought a much clearer view on issues nationwide and in our own backyard...

In response to David Byrne's response to Cleveland at DavidByrne.com
I'll say this from my view. Mr. Byrne is an incredible artist. He's grown into one of that with the stature and influence that one would have equated with many of those that inspired him. A former art student (who just happened to get into music, in a world-famous, groundbreaking, Rock-And-Roll-Hall-Of-Fame-Inducted band - class of 2002), he definitely has a keen ability to observe. Here however, I think he's so busy looking for something, he misses everything else...

Christian Riemenschneider of Brothers Lounge
The outside was restored to its original 1911 condition; the inside is state-of-the-art. Equal parts rock club, local pub and wine bar, Brothers Lounge has a ballroom for entertaining, a stunning mahogany and cherry sheen and a restored tin ceiling. And if you think that's amazing, you should see their menus. Full service, affordable and gourmet were the first three terms to come to mind... though the list of adjectives is far longer.
Cool Cleveland Managing Editor Peter Chakerian sat down with Brothers Lounge co-owner Riemenschneider and talked with him about the gargantuan restoration project/adaptive reuse of space that finally came to fruition in March...

Swing State @ Shaker Square Theater, 10/28 What do Barack Obama, Stephanie Tubbs Jones, Lee Fisher, Ted Strickland, J. Kenneth Blackwell, the Clintons and Jason Zone Fisher all have in common? Well, besides being heavily entrenched in the U.S. political system, they all play an important part in Jason Zone Fisher's movie Swing State. Jason, son of Democratic Lt. Governor Lee Fisher, produced, directed and starred in this feature length documentary that clearly illustrates the emotional roller coaster ride in the life of a political candidate. Jason chronicles his father's journey through his political campaign (and victory) of 2006, including the dramatic highs and lows of a rigorous schedule fueled by determination and optimism...

Cleveland Orchestra: Musical Fireworks @ Severance Hall 10/23 250 years ago saw the end of a war between various countries in Europe, including, of course, those traditional warriors: France and England. The battle was over the Austrian Succession. Could Maria Theresa be Empress of Austria in her own right, as the rightful heir of the Hapsburg dynasty, or only because her husband (whoever he might be) was the Emperor. And haven't we progressed a lot as a civilized society in all those years? Not too likely. At any rate, the War entangled not only Austria, England and France, but also Spain, Bavaria, Prussia, Holland, Saxony, and the country in which we now live but which was not yet the United States of America. No, that happy event would not take place for another 25 years...

Concerts at the Crossroads @ Christ Episcopal 10/25 Concerts at the Crossroads is a fairly new entry into the recital series concept being presented around town by various churches. This one takes place at Christ Episcopal, which is indeed located at a crossroads, by some accounts the busiest in the county. The organizer is Nathan Carterette, music director at the church, and an excellent pianist in his own right. Currently, they're engaged in a three recital series of song cycles by Robert Schumann. The first one featured soprano Amy Hall and Mr. Carterette. On November 22, she will return for a joint presentation with Saturday's soloist, tenor JR Fralick, professor of music at Baldwin-Wallace...

Hansel & Gretel @ Opera Cleveland 10/31 With all that wood stacked outside their cottage, and the too-clean and neat clothing worn by the children, how could this family be starving? That's the initial impression that stayed with me throughout Opera Cleveland's presentation of Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel & Gretel Friday evening. Unfortunately, they never convinced me otherwise...
